Remember Bangladeshis in Brick Lane during the 70's, but recently went to Petticoat Lane for the first time in years, had no idea most shops and stalls are run and sell African produce. I assume Roman road and the others have gone the same way?

East End markets and high streets are ‘crime-ridden and slowly dying’

Some of the East End’s most famous markets and high streets are dirty, crime-ridden and slowly dying, according to a damning report.
Brick Lane suffers from high levels of crime, significant numbers of empty shops and its traders and shopkeepers are seeing their turnovers decline.
The report, commissioned by Tower Hamlets council, also criticised Whitechapel Road for the large number of takeaways, betting shops and amusement arcades, as well as high crime and poor standards of customer service.
It failed in nine out of the 20 key categories it was tested on, from safety to street hygiene.
Bethnal Green Road was criticised for crime, failing shops and empty market stalls in the report which was carried out by experts from the Association of Town and City Management and the Retail Group.
Nine of the borough’s town centres and markets were studied for the council.
Major high streets plus traditional markets at Roman Road, Chrisp Street and Watney Market were included.
Crime was the biggest single issue highlighted, with only two locations - Crossharbour and Bromley-by-Bow high streets - not afflicted by a high level of reported incidents.
The report found that empty market stalls were also an issue at Brick Lane, Whitechapel Road, Roman Road and Chrisp Street.
Poor food hygiene was another problem with many cafés and restaurants in Whitechapel Road, Brick Lane, Bethnal Green, Roman Road, Chrisp Street and Watney Market.
Shoppers complained of a poor choice of goods and bad service at Whitechapel, Chrisp Street and Brick Lane.
Tower Hamlets is investing to improve tatty shopfronts, remove graffiti and upgrade street lighting. Hygiene training will be offered to restaurants, and the council will consider “curating” market stalls to drive out rogue traders and improve the range of goods.
Azmal Hussain, vice chair of the Brick Lane Restaurateurs’ Association, defended Brick Lane, saying tourists came to see its graffiti and authentic vibe, not a sanitised shopping street.

“There is a lot of heritage in Brick Lane and people like that.”
Joshua Peck, Tower Hamlets cabinet member for economic growth, said: “By investing in public realm and safety improvements we’ll support thriving places like Brick Lane and Columbia Road flower market to retain their status as key destinations.”

I remember buying my green flight jacket (long before every joe had one) down the lane. That shop with a big bunch of skinheads running it. I noticed someone wearing a dark blue one the other day, still making them.

Haha we sometimes got the 23 from Upton Park and got off at Bennetts Castle lane where my mate lived !!

Not sure we knew what a Gayer was then :-)

The 23 (Becontree Heath to Aldgate) was where it was at, Lane-wise. Why? Because it passed the Academy, of course. And it went through Barking instead of Ilford.

Frankly, the 25 was for gayers, mummies boys and Tottenham fans.

Used to go with the old man down the lane when I was a kid. The main street then was Cheshire street. Wed park up on the other side of the railway line and walk over the bridge there. Back then it was little more than a bomb site. The old boy was always asking "john" how much it was for a certain tool. Then we'd walk along to where the bikes were and I'd always look with envy at the racers compared to my yellow chipper. For my 12th birthday I got a racer straight from the lane. Obviously wed always pick up some beigels to take home. Memories of boiled edd beigels and hearing the advert of the "big red building in petticoat lane" on LBC before watching the smurfs and Police 5.

The 'Bangladesh' bit (as you call it) is down the Whitechapel end with all the curry houses/sari shops etc. (Bangla Town).
The local cockney bengalis stripe the yuppies/hipsters and tourists up in the restaurants. It's an east end tradition!

The old lane, as I said earlier, is shrinking.
In fact, compared to back in the day, there's not a lot down there. It's a shame cos you can still get a good mixture of things down there. (and good mixture of people).
I remember going down there with me grandad and me old man as a kid and it was packed with people and stalls down the length of 5 or 6 streets. And there was stacks of old tuut being sold off the deck.

Pickled Herring stall (Reggie Graham). All the pets along club row. And everything else you could think of.


It's good that the lane's hanging on and surviving cos that's our heritage but I don't know how much longer it will survive. The new 'residents' of the 'apartments' in club row are already complaining about the noise on Sunday mornings. (C---ts!). It's the only day the stalls are out for a few hours.

Times change (not always for the good) but I think the stall holders are gradually calling it a day down the lane. (I know some of em do other markets during the week but find it hard covering their pitch fee for the day down the lane).

Crying shame, buts that's why I go down there. Apart from having a laugh with the regulars and bumping into old faces , its my way of keeping it going by buying stuff off the local traders.

PD - yeh, used to go down the Roman on Saturdays. Kelly's pie mash was always first port of call. Ain't been for years in a Saturday but think it's still a lot of birds clothes/bags etc.

CasualKen - yeh, I know the bike stall. My mate knows the bloke (Alan). We'll have a word with him if he's down there 2morra. And I remember Daycocks in roman rd by cranbrook estate. Next to an 'aquarium' shop where we used to get our bait on the way to fishing over Vicky Park.
It's a small world...............but you wouldn't wanna paint it!

My sisters father in law still has a bike stall down the lane on Sundays, his patch is being swallowed up slowly by apartments. Big Alan if anyone on here is a regular down there, use to own Daycocks in Roman Road and East Ham. Still good for a Sunday stroll when your hungover

Good childhood memories of all of us going to Roman Road on Saturdays with my Mum's friend and her kids. What's it like now, I heard it's pretty much a ghetto?

I was in a tattoo convention in the Old Brewery some time back, we went for some food up the road. The place had just opened. I asked for a bit of pie n mash as it was on the menu, the fella said it would be quite a while, then told someone to turn on the lights in the cabinet to heat up the pies.
We left, and after being harassed by a load of no marks inviting us into their restaurants, we chose a place. After we had ordered, the music came on so loud that we couldn't speak. Fucking Aliens.
